Questions
What is the best video format for Reels, TikTok and Shorts?
Vertical 9:16 at 1080 × 1920 pixels, saved as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, at 23 to 60 frames per second. Instagram and TikTok both name H.264 and 23 to 60 fps in their developer docs, and a 9:16 video fills the phone screen on all three apps. Keep it between 3 seconds and 3 minutes and it fits everywhere.
How long can a Reel, a TikTok and a YouTube Short be?
Instagram Reels run from 3 seconds to 15 minutes. TikTok takes 3 seconds to 10 minutes through its API: every account can post 3 minutes, and some accounts can post 5 or 10. YouTube Shorts run up to 3 minutes; a longer video becomes a regular YouTube video.
Why is my Reel cropped or shown with blank space?
Instagram recommends 9:16 for Reels to avoid cropping or blank space. A video in another shape, like 16:9 from a camera or 4:5 from a feed post, has to be fitted to the screen. Export it at 1080 × 1920 and it fills the screen as you framed it.
Why did my Short upload as a regular YouTube video?
YouTube treats a video as a Short when it is square or vertical and up to 3 minutes long. A horizontal video, or one over 3 minutes, becomes a regular video. Crop it to 9:16 and keep it to 3 minutes to post it as a Short.
How big can the video file be?
Instagram takes Reels up to 1 GB (some of Meta's pages name 300 MB, so smaller is safer), TikTok takes up to 4 GB, and YouTube up to 256 GB or 12 hours. Videos over 15 minutes need a verified YouTube account, which takes a phone number.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The checker reads the file in your browser and never sends it anywhere, so even private or unreleased videos are fine to check. Closing the tab forgets them.
Does Selfpost check this for me when I post?
Yes. Selfpost checks every video against Instagram, TikTok and YouTube when you add it, and shows which platforms it fits before you post to all three in one go.
