Questions

How do I record the sound playing on my computer?

Choose Computer sound and click Start recording. Your browser opens its share window. In Chrome or Edge on Windows or a Chromebook, pick Entire screen and switch on the audio option (“Share system audio”): everything your computer plays is recorded, headphones included. To record just one browser tab, like a video or a web call, pick that tab and keep its audio on. The recorder keeps only the sound, never the picture.

Can I record computer audio on a Mac?

Yes, with Chrome or Edge. Sharing a browser tab with its audio always works. Chrome 141 or newer on macOS 14.2 or newer can also share your Mac's sound when you share a window or the whole screen. The first time, macOS asks you to allow your browser under System Settings, Privacy & Security. Safari and Firefox can't share computer sound yet, so use Chrome or Edge for this, or record your microphone in any browser.

Why does my computer-sound recording have no sound?

Usually the audio option in the share window was off. Click Start recording again and switch it on before you click Share. On a Mac or Linux, pick a browser tab, since sharing a window there may come without sound. Also check that the tab or app isn't muted and that sound is actually playing while you record.

Which file should I download: WAV or the smaller file?

WAV for editing. It is uncompressed 16-bit audio at your device's own sample rate, and every editor opens it: Audacity, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, GarageBand, Logic and more. The smaller file (M4A or WebM, depending on your browser) is about a tenth of the size and is handy for sending a voice note, but not every editor opens WebM.

What does “Raw sound (for music)” do?

Browsers clean up microphone sound for calls: they cancel echo, remove background noise and even out the volume. That helps speech in a normal room but squashes music and singing. Raw sound turns all three off, so you get exactly what your microphone hears.

Is there a time limit?

No. A take keeps recording until you stop it. Your recordings live in the browser until you download them, and stereo WAV takes about 11 MB per minute, so download long sessions now and then. One WAV file can hold a little over 6 hours of stereo sound.

Are my recordings uploaded anywhere?

No. Recording, the WAV file and the preview all happen in your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to Selfpost or anyone else. Takes you haven't downloaded are gone when you close the tab, so your browser asks before you leave.
